The Perfect Flame: Using Candles to Deepen Your Meditation Practice

Meditation is a practice of focused concentration, and one of the most ancient and effective techniques involves using a candle flame. Known in yoga as Trataka meditation, this practice involves gazing steadily at a single point—in this case, the soft, flickering light of a candle.
Why Meditate with a Candle?
The flame of a candle is an ideal focal point. It is gentle, captivating, and its constant, subtle movement helps to hold your attention without being distracting. This practice can help to calm a restless mind, improve concentration, and enhance your ability to stay present.
How to Practice Candle Gazing (Trataka):
- Set the Scene: Find a quiet, dimly lit room where you won't be disturbed. Place a lit candle on a stable surface, about arm's length away, so the flame is at eye level.
- Get Comfortable: Sit in a comfortable meditation posture with your spine straight. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to settle your body and mind.
- Begin Gazing: Gently open your eyes and let your gaze rest on the candle flame. Try not to stare intensely; keep your gaze soft and relaxed. Observe the different colors in the flame—the blue at the base, the bright yellow and orange core.
- Stay Focused: Your mind will inevitably wander. When it does, gently guide your attention back to the flame. Don't judge your thoughts, just let them pass by like clouds.
- Close Your Eyes: Continue gazing for 1-3 minutes, or until your eyes begin to water. Then, gently close your eyes and focus on the afterimage of the flame that appears in your mind's eye. Keep your attention here until the image fades.
- Conclude: Once the afterimage is gone, keep your eyes closed for another minute, observing the stillness within.
Pairing this practice with a grounding scent like Sandalwood or Frankincense can further enhance the meditative experience, creating a truly serene atmosphere.
